Zermatt in Winter 2013/2014

Skiing and snowboarding the whole year round, with 365 days of snow – you can only find this in Zermatt. As the highest altitude, largest and most efficiently developed snow sport location in the Alps, Zermatt offers an absolute snow guarantee. In winter, 360 km of slopes attracts skiers of all levels both on the Swiss as well as on the Italian side of the Matterhorn. But also winter hikers and snow shoe enthusiasts can enjoy the snowy, glistening landscape.

Circular trail around Zermatt

It is anticipated that the circular trail around Zermatt will be completed at the end of October 2013. It can be accessed both in the winter and the summer. The big attraction here is that the pedestrians can now walk beside the Gornergrat Railway high above Findelbach on the path section over the ravine that will be specially bulit for the walkers. Beware: You must have a head for heights!

Swatch Skiers Cup in February 2014

The stars of the freeriding scene will enchant visitors at Zermatt with the friendly battle between the stars of the „Americas“ and the crackerjacks from Europe. With daring jumps in the powdery snow and on the steepest slopes. The event will most likely take place for one week at the start of Ferruary 2014. The Backcountry Slopestyle Contest will be held again in Breitboden at Gornergrat/Hohtälli depending on the snow conditions. Here, spectators can watch the freerider scene live, just like gladiators in an arena.

Patrouille des Glaciers 2014 (29th of April – 3rd of May 2014)

The legendary ski race, organised for teams, runs from Zermatt over the high alpine mountains via Arolla to Verbier. Military and civilian teams can compete in the race. The toughest team competition in the world covers a distance of 53 km (110 km effective kilometres) with altitude differences of 4,000 meters.

Hotel Alpenstern ** becomes a four-star hotel

Hotel Alpenstern, previously a two-star hotel, becomes a Chalet Hotel Garni in the four-star category. It will open in December 2013. The result is a charming chalet-style hotel, tailored to the authentic world of Zermatt. With junior suites, an attractive spa area and much more.

Zermatt in the wintertime is also an attractive gourmet hotspot

Famous Chefs de Cuisine spoil their guests in Zermatt like migratory birds in the winter. Ivo Adam from the Ristorante Seven in Ascona (15 Gault Millau points, Seven Group) is still bedazzling guests for a second winter season in the Backstage Hotel & Vernissage. Roland Kilian from the Rebstock Restaurant in Tschugg is now cooking for his third winter season in the Dolce Vita restaurant. And in the Mont Cervin Palace (Ristorante Le Capri, 1 Michelin star, 16 Gault Millau points) the team of Michelin Star chef, Andrea Migliaccio, from Hotel Capri Palace in Capri, near Naples (2 Michelin stars) has been bringing the culinary sea breeze to Zermatt for a few years now.

New ‘fonduestübli‘ in Zermatt

Daniel F. Lauber of the Hotel Cervo opened his hotel five years ago, then extended the terrace and finally built further chalets. Now he’s again adding something new: In December 2013 the latest tavern will be opening next to the Hotel Cervo, at the end of the Rothorn ski slopes. The fonduestübli is called ‘‘Ferdinand“, and accommodates 40 people in a simple and cosy setting. Raclette (scraped melted cheese) is served at the tables, together with other cheese specialities such as fondues, wines exclusively from the Valais, and dried meat dishes.

Hörnlihütte cabin: Winter accommodation closed

The winter accommodation will no longer be available as from the 1st of May 2013 to June 2015 due to renovations. The cabin will be closed in summer 2014. The Hörnlihütte cabin will have been fully renovated to the latest standards by the anniversary year of 2015, marking the 150th year after the first ascent of the Matterhorn.
