Upper Austria’s capital is worth visiting. When Linz was the Capital of Culture in 2009, it proved that it is more than simply a steel town on the Danube. Numerous buildings of cultural value, sights, museums, restaurants and cafés make up the city centre and offer visitors not only entertainment, but also provide them with information and interesting facts. Since 2013, Linz has had a new cultural landmark: the Musiktheater am Volksgarten, Europe’s most stateof- the-art opera house, which is where the operas, operettas, musicals and ballet productions of the Landestheater Linz are put on. The new building stands out because of its excellent acoustics, high level of visitor comfort and state-of-the-art stage technology. Just a few minutes’ walk away from Linz’s main square, the Hauptplatz, you will find the two stages of the main house of the Landestheater: the Schauspielhaus and the Kammerspiele. The building on the promenade can look back at more than 200 years of history and is now used primarily for theatre performances.
If you walk a bit further down Linz’s high street, the Landstraße, you will find the main stage of the Theatre for Young Audiences, u\hof:, in the OÖ Kultur-quartier. Under the artistic direction of Rainer Mennicken and the commercial direction of Uwe Schmitz-Gielsdorf, Landestheater Linz offers up to 40 new productions and up to 800 performances every year for visitors of all ages at the various venues in the city centre of Linz.
