LUCERNE FESTIVAL is one of the world’s pre-eminent festivals in the realm of classical music. For almost 80 years it has been the presenter of concerts on a world-class level, featuring a unique diversity of offerings. Each year three festivals take place: LUCERNE FESTIVAL at Easter, LUCERNE FESTIVAL in Summer, and LUCERNE FESTIVAL at the Piano.
The most famous ensembles are performing during the festivals, such as, for example, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam. Since 1998 the central venue has been the KKL Luzern (Culture and Convention Center Lucerne), which was designed by the star French architect Jean Nouvel and the famous American acoustician Russell Johnson. Thanks to its adjustable sound panels, the concert hall boasts phenomenal acoustics that enable audiences to enjoy unforgettable musical experiences. More than 120,000 visitors make their way yearly to attend the three festivals which combine the traditional repertoire and modern music.
LUCERNE FESTIVAL at Easter is focusing on sacred music, lasts nine days and traditionally ends on Palm Sunday.
LUCERNE FESTIVAL in Summer
Can so-called “serious music” also be funny? Is it appropriate to laugh during a concert? “Humor” is the theme of the 2015 Summer Festival, a theme intended to clear away stubborn prejudices. For we will show how enjoyably entertaining classical music can also be. The LUCERNE FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA, one of the finest orchestras in the world, traditionally opens the Summer Festival. Highly gifted young musicians from all over the world flock to Lucerne to attend the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY and perform contemporary works. In addition, the crème de la crème of the classical scene comes to Lucerne to perform: world-famous orchestra, conductors, and soloists.
LUCERNE FESTIVAL at the Piano takes place in the last week in November and includes two weekends. The city transforms into a stage for revered masters and young virtuosos of the keyboard. In addition to classical piano concerts, “Piano Off-Stage”, the Jazz Festival in the Festival, turns Lucerne’s finest bars into venues for the art of improvisation.
