Finnair welcomes Malaysia Airlines in oneworld alliance expansion

Finnair’s partner Malaysia Airlines becomes a full member of the oneworld alliance with effect from tomorrow, adding one of commercial aviation’s most frequent award winners to the world’s leading quality airline alliance.

„Malaysia Airlines, like Finnair, is a very established and respected airline with a great history of quality, and they’re joining oneworld for the same reason we did,“ says Finnair CEO Mika Vehviläinen. „When we pull together and pool our considerable talents and resources, we all become stronger and able to deliver more services, benefits and value to our customers than we could by going it alone. I’m very pleased to extend a warm welcome to our friends and colleagues from Malaysia Airlines.“

The 125 million members of the established oneworld airlines frequent flyer programs, including Finnair Plus, can from midnight tonight earn and redeem awards and tier status points and receive all other oneworld benefits on Malaysia Airlines. Additionally, to celebrate the addition of the new recruit, members of Finnair Plus and other oneworld loyalty programs will receive double the normal mileage awards when flying on Malaysia Airlines between February 15 and April 15, on tickets bought from today to April 15, 2013.

Since last November, Finnair has maintained a bilateral codeshare agreement with Malaysia Airlines on select flights between Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok, Hong Kong and Singapore, and on select flights between Finnair’s Helsinki hub and Amsterdam, London, Paris and Frankfurt.

The codeshares enable passengers to book itineraries to Malaysia on a single Finnair ticket, and vice versa for Malaysia Airlines customers flying to Finland.

Malaysia Airlines substantially expands the oneworld network in South East Asia, where it strengthens the alliance’s connectivity between many key business cities in Asia and other parts of the world, benefitting customers with an expanded global network and increased competition. Malaysia Airlines’ network is covered by oneworld’s full and extensive range of alliance fares and sales products, including the new Visit Malaysia pass, which offers foreign visitors discounted fares throughout the airline’s domestic network in conjunction with a flight to Malaysia with Finnair or any other oneworld carrier.

Malaysia Airlines addition expands oneworld’s global coverage to 842 destinations in 156 countries, served by some 9,000 departures a day operated by a combined fleet of some 2,500 aircraft, carrying nearly 340 million passengers a year, with annual revenues of US$ 110 billion. Besides Finnair and Malaysia Airlines, the oneworld alliance includes airberlin, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Iberia, Japan Airlines, LAN, Qantas, Royal Jordanian, S7 Airlines and some 30 affiliated carriers. Members elect Qatar Airways and Sri Lankan Airlines are on track to join within the next 12 months.
