The region combines many contrasting holiday attractions. The town of St.Gallen, for instance, with its ‘abbot’s territory’, now a world heritage site, is a genuine must. From Rorschach to Altenrhein, the shores of Lake Constance provide outdoor swimming opportunities, water sports plus exciting museums exhibiting everything to do with travel and aviation. The rural St.Gallen area is a marvellous hiking and biking region, with lake and mountain panoramas always in view.

St.Gallen – cultural center and shopping center with proud history

St.Gallen, the local capital of north-eastern Switzerland, is the beating heart of the region, providing every opportunity for cultural pursuits and leisurely shopping expeditions. The city was founded by an Irish monk in 612 who settled down in this region because he felt on the floor and was convinced that this happening might be the sign of God. The historic abbot’s territory with the magnificent baroque cathedral and the rococo library are UNESCO world heritage sites.

Buildings by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava lend the historic townscape a highly modern look.
