St. Moritz – where winter tourism was born 150 years ago

St. Moritz is celebrating the 150th anniversary of winter tourism in winter 2013/14.

In autumn 1864, Johannes Badrutt made a bet with four English guests who always spent their summer in St. Moritz, that even in winter they would enjoy the mild Engadin sunshine on his terrace in their shirtsleeves; if not, he would reimburse their travel costs – both ways. The English guests came back to the Upper Engadin at Christmas and it was not until Easter that they returned home – tanned, relaxed and happy. Winter tourism in the Alps was born and St. Moritz developed into one of the most dazzling winter sport resorts. The British flocked to the Engadin and left their mark in the form of polo and cricket tournaments, the Cresta Run, and skeleton and bobsleigh races.

The Olympia Bob Run is the oldest bobsleigh run in the world – as well as the only natural-ice track in existence that hosts international races. During a bob taxi ride you can find out what it feels like to hurtle down the 1’722 m natural-ice bob run at lightning speed, piloted by a professional, experiencing speeds of up to 135 km/h.

In no other resort in Switzerland you can find such a wonderful interplay between high-alpine and glacier landscapes, over 200 idyllic mountain and bathing lakes in summer, unique light conditions, a spectacular panorama and the famous Champagne climate in winter, that turns the dry air in the winter sunshine into billions of tiny diamonds.

The access to 350 km of superbly prepared slopes, three snow parks, 57 ski lifts, 34 mountain restaurants with their inspiring sun terraces, 200 km of cross-country ski trails and 150 km of winter walking paths, combined with the spectacular landscape, makes the region a real winter wonderland.

In St. Moritz your winter holiday dreams to become true:
