Saalfelden Leogang: Rich in contrast

Saalfelden Leogang is the most varied holiday region in the Alps. Between Stone Mountains and Green Valleys, between rusticity and urbanity, between tradition and innovation: the unique combination of the town of Saalfelden and the village of Leogang provides a very special range of holidays which are rich in contrast.

Saalfelden – Culture & nature in symbiosis

Saalfelden is a town which is close to nature and is full of enchantment and inspiration. In the cultural scene in particular the main holiday town has established an excellent reputation for itself; the international Jazz festival has taken place here for more than 36 years. The variety of seminar and conference offers and the distinct hospitality makes Saalfelden an ideal location for conferences and company events. In winter the holiday town stands out in particular due to its expertise in the Nordic sector, and its many sporting greats like Felix Gottwald and Simon Eder, are proof of this. The small town of Saalfelden also has over 140 shops, making it the biggest shopping metropolis in Pinzgau. The impressive range of all kinds of specialist shops makes shopping a genuine pleasure.

Leogang – the most exciting holiday village in Austria

The down-to-earth holiday village of Leogang can look back on a long history and tradition. In earlier times known in particular for its mining industry, at the start of the 20th century high Alpine tourism started to put down roots. Today this energy-charged holiday village stands out due to its high level of innovation. In winter this is revealed in particular by the 200 kilometres of pistes in Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang; in summer Leogang is especially convincing due to the wide variety of hiking routes and the world class Bikepark on the Asitz. Its greatest strength however lies in the genuineness of its people and its sense of community, since everything here is still sincere: and this is something that guests sense.

A sporty summer

In summer the terrain belongs to cyclists and hikers in particular. 400 kilometres of hiking trails await guests who enjoy discovering the natural and romantic landscape around Leogang’s Stone Mountains and the Steinernes Meer massif on foot. To make hiking more interesting for families with children, several themed hiking routes have been designed. For tourists who prefer to discover the region in the saddle, Saalfelden Leogang offers a total of 480 kilometres of cycle trails in the valley and 720 kilometres of mountain bike routes of all difficulty levels, and therefore promises unlimited cycling pleasure. Meanwhile the BikePark in Leogang is one of the most popular places of its kind in the whole of Europe, and has for several years been one of the venues for the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup, the only Mountain Bike World Cup venue in Austria. In 2012 Saalfelden Leogang faced up to a very special challenge: the UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships 2012 took place in the region from 29th August until 9th September 2012.

Indeed Saalfelden Leogang provides its guests who have a passion for sport, even more. The two 18-hole golf courses, Brandlhof and Urslautal, meet all the requirements fans of golf could want from classic Championship courses. Those who want even more diversity will find a total of 15 beautifully landscaped and challenging golf courses within 70 kilometres. The moor lake at Ritzensee provides refreshment in the heat of summer, as do the adventure and outdoor sports pools in Saalfelden and Leogang. Those who want to experience Leogang’s Stone Mountains and the Steinernes Meer massif up close, can really let off steam on more than 500 climbing routes of all difficulty levels – from sports climbing, to Alpine climbing, right the way through to via ferrata and climbing halls as an alternative. Here, you’ll want for nothing when it comes to unadulterated climbing fun. The climbing hall „felsenfest“ in Saalfelden has a total surface area of 1640 m².

A cultural summer

The holiday region of Saalfelden Leogang is also gaining an ever greater reputation on the international cultural scene. The International Jazz Festival in Saalfelden, which has been taking place for more than 36 years, is a cultural highlight in the year. Always held on the last weekend in August the holiday town of Saalfelden is transformed into the hub of the Jazz world; artists come from all over the world to attend this festival. In the summer months, June, July and August the ‚Berg der Sinne‘ awaits, with a very special range of concerts, the ‚Tonspuren auf dem Asitz‘. This means you get to enjoy five concerts in very different musical styles during the romantic sunset. Those who would like to experience more about times past, can head to the two museums in Saalfelden and Leogang. The local history museum Schloss Ritzen provides an insight into popular traditions and has 24 departments full of exhibits, such as the crib collection and early historical finds. The Mining and Gothic museum in Leogang provides a collection of Gothic saint figures from throughout the Alpine area – the only one of its kind in the world. In the show mine of Leogang you get to experience up close how bronze, silver and copper were mined in earlier times.

An Alpine winter

Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang, which has more than 200 kilometres of pistes and 56 state-of-the-art cable car and lift facilities, guarantees comfort, an expansive area and versatility during the winter. From gentle slopes to wide carving pistes through to the World Championship ski run, from superbly shaped fun parks to a variety of pristine downhills and mogul pistes. The vastness of the very well prepared, wide pistes are very much held in high regard by guests. Whether cool snowboarder, little piste munchkin, a Freerider with plenty of tricks or a sporty carver – the ideal terrain is available for every winter athlete. Floodlit pistes, the fun park, fast-paced tubing, and fun toboggan rides on illuminated toboggan runs turn night into day for those who have boundless energy.

A Nordic winter

The holiday region of Saalfelden offers its guests around 150 kilometres of networked slopes this winter. The extensive network of dual tracks and skating tracks are attended to every day, since as well as skiers and snowboarders, cross-country skiers are one of the most important target groups in Saalfelden and Leogang. As for the piste area, in the slope network there are a variety of difficulty levels. Among the most challenging are the World Championship slopes on Ritzensee, which are used as training areas by top, local athletes such as Simon Eder and Felix Gottwald. Numerous connecting trails, which are of course also suitable for newcomers, take you to neighbouring areas such as Maria Alm, Maishofen and to the Biathlon World Cup metropolis of Hochfilzen. In addition to well-tended slopes, the holiday region of Saalfelden Leogang provides cross-country skiers optimal support in the ski schools and at the service points.
