Rheatian Railway: News and events for 2014

RhB – 125 years of fascinating travel

The Rhaetian Railway (RhB) has now been serving Graubünden, Switzerland’s biggest canton by land area, for no fewer than 125 years. The railway, which was founded in 1889 with the inauguration of the line from Landquart to Klosters, now consists of a 384-kilometre long network connecting some of the highest points of this mountainous area of Switzerland. The RhB’s two observation-car trains, the Bernina Express and Glacier Express, draw enthusiastic visitors to the railway from all over the world. The Albula and Bernina lines were both granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 2008.

UNESCO World Heritage – A masterpiece of railway engineering

The line across Albula and Bernina, now more than a century old, is regarded as a truly unique masterpiece of the railway engineer’s art. Designed from the start to exist in perfect harmony with its surrounding countryside, the line stands as a monument to the pioneering days of railway-building. Since July 2008, the Albula and Bernina lines of the Rhaetian Railway have been on the UNESCO list of World Heritage sites.

100 years of the Chur-Arosa Line

In 2014, the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) will be celebrating the hundredth anniversary of the inauguration of the railway line between Chur and Arosa. The railway, built in just two years shortly after the turn of the 20th century, still takes about an hour to carry locals and tourists up to the famous spa town at 1,739 metres above sea level. The RhB will be commemorating the centenary of the opening of the 26 kilometre-long line with a weekend of celebrations in Arosa in December 2014.
