Lucerne – Lake Lucerne Region : Tradition and Trend

The Lucerne – Lake Lucerne Region with the world famous city of Lucerne and the idyllic lakeside villages of Weggis and Vitznau on the shores of Lake Lucerne on the sunny southern flank of Mt. Rigi offer a variety of holiday experiences. Avant-garde is just as much a part of the city, with the modern KKL Luzern (Culture and Convention Centre Lucerne) designed by Jean Nouvel, as the sights which have attracted guests for centuries. The museums, theatres and festivals have all contributed to establishing Lucerne as a culture city, which elegantly accommodates both tradition and trend. Enjoy memorable excursions on a paddle-steamer on Lake Lucerne, soak up pure nature on the close-by mountains and relax in the mild climate of the “Lucerne Riviera” with its leading offers of wellness hotels.

Traditions and Nostalgia

Switzerland has its origins in the Lucerne – Lake Lucerne Region. Here, centuries-old traditions are alive and maintained. Every spring, the people of Lucerne are thrilled by Carnival. In the UNESCO Biosphere Entlebuch, you will discover the age-old craft of charcoal making directly by the kiln. The art of hay-making in the wild on the steep slopes is even now still very wide-spread in the cantons of Uri and Schwyz. In autumn, the decorated herds are accompanied down into the valley by Alpine herdsmen and dairymen and folk music groups on numerous Alpine cattle drives. www.luzern.com

Excursions in the Lucerne – Lake Lucerne Region

The region lends itself ideally to combining your visit to Lucerne with an excursion. A boat ride on Lake Lucerne, which has the most extensive inland navigation system in Europe, is simply a must. The panorama boat, the five paddle steamers or the elegant catamaran are certain to render your stay extraordinary. And there is a new and marvelous journey to the heart of Switzerland: Take an enchanting cruise aboard the historic paddle steamer “Gallia” from Lucerne to the legendary Rütli meadow, the birthplace of Switzerland. Accompanied by traditional and modern Swiss music you will be amazed by the wonderful Alpine landscape and the rich variety in scenery. The crew will narrate the most important sights along the way and make you feel very welcome aboard this glorious steamboat from 1913. Enjoy the splashing of the paddle wheels and the chime of the steam whistle. Be sure to bring your camera! An excursion to the Alps in the region is, in fact, an age-old tradition. Traces of this tradition can be tracked

while taking a ride on Europe’s oldest mountain railway, as it winds its way up Mt. Rigi or on the world’s steepest cogwheel train to the top of Mt. Pilatus.  Those seeking fun and games on a glacier have to take a ride on the first revolving aerial cable car – the Rotair – to the top of Mt. Titlis: at 3000 meters, it is the highest accessible peak in the Lucerne – Lake Lucerne. If you like to combine a boat with a mountain experience try the “Golden Round Trip”: by boat, the world’s steepest cogwheel railway and cable car around and up to the peak of Mt. Pilatus. Titlis with its  Since 2012 the world’s first CabriO® cable car (a double-deck aerial cable car) connects the middle station Kälti with the Stanserhorn. www.lakelucerne.ch, www.rigi.ch, www.pilatus.ch, www.titlis.ch, www.stanserhorn.ch

Festivals in Lucerne

With events like the Lucerne Festival, but also with smaller, innovative events such as the Fumetto Comics Festival, Blue Balls or Lucerne Blues Festival, the city of Lucerne offers a wide range of first-class festivals throughout the entire year and presents itself as THE Festival City of Switzerland.

In 2013 Lucerne is a Wagner city. For six years – from 1866 to 1872 – the composer resided at the Villa Tribschen. This was a decisive period for him artistically as well as personally. It was here that he completed Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg and resumed work on The Ring of the Nibelung, composing both the third act of Siegfried and Götterdämmerung. To mark the composer’s 200th birthday, Lucerne Festival is presenting the first complete performance of the Ring cycle in the Wagner city of Lucerne, with the English conductor Jonathan Nott, the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, and internationally acclaimed Wagner singers, including Albert Dohmen, Petra Lang, Mikhail Petreno, and Klaus Florian Vogt. To supplement the Ring – and together with the Swiss Richard Wagner Society – they are also offering an attractive program of special related events involving excursions, museum visits, and walking tours in Wagner’s footsteps. www.lucernefestival.ch, www.richard-wagner-museum.ch

Wellness at the “Lucerne Riviera”

The picturesque lakeside villages of Weggis and Vitznau are located on the shores of Lake Lucerne and the sunny southern flank of Mt. Rigi. This beautiful resort region has established itself as one of the best addresses for spa and wellness. In 2012 the new highlight opened his doors on Mount Rigi – the Mineral bath & spa Rigi Kaltbad, designed by the famous Swiss architect Mario Botta. Six leading spa hotels have a stated wellness philosophy and offer everything needed for a relaxing time out. The villages have a mild climate and a multitude of Mediterranean plants, such as palm trees, grapes, orchids and chestnuts grow here. It is therefore not surprising, that the region is often referred to as the “Lucerne Riviera” and of which even Goethe, Queen Victoria, Mark Twain became enthusiastic. A new era in the hotel business started on the shores of Lake Lucerne by the end of March 2013. The new Park Hotel Vitznau welcomes its guests with a unique combination of a suite hotel, residence, medical centre and research facility: www.parkhotel-vitznau.ch, www.rigi.ch, www.wvrt.ch
