Anniversaries
130th anniversary of ski sport in Davos
The first skis arrived in Davos 130 years ago In 1883, future snow researcher and father of German ski sport, Wilhelm Paulcke (1873 – 1949), was given a pair of Telemark skis for Christmas by his father. The new gadgets from Norway created great interest in the whole of Davos; the model was taken to a Davos wainwright to make some copies for Paulcke’s schoolmates. The first curves in Graubunden,  even in Switzerland, were made on the Dischma slopes and other places.

110th anniversary of the Davos Ski Club
The Davos Ski Club is one of the oldest in Switzerland
The founding of the Davos English Ski Club and the Davos Ski Club took place in 1903. Both clubs furthered the development  of ski sport in Davos. The first Parsenn Hut, built by the Davos Ski Club on the incentive of English guests, was officially  inaugurated in1906. Meanwhile, the Davos Ski Club has become the largest in Switzerland and members of the Zurich and southern Germany sections carry the “spirit of Davos” far beyond cantonal and national borders.

130th anniversary of sledging and bob sport in Davos
Sledging and bob sport has a long tradition in Davos
Sledging was the only type of sport practised by local people in earlier days, however only as a leisure-time activity. It was introduced as a sport by English author and cultural historian John Addington Symonds, who organized minor races as early as 1881. In 1883, he launched and directed the first international sledge race with time measurement. The route led from the Wolfgang Pass down to Klosters. The first bob race in Davos took place on 17 January 1889.

120th anniversary of the international Ice Skating Club Davos
The oldest club in Davos was founded in 1894
In 1869 the first natural ice rink was created in the garden of the Kurhaus (today Arkadenplatz). But this first small rink could, already in the second year of its existence, no longer satisfy the growing needs. Therefore, a new ice rink was built in the winter of 1870/71, which consisted of 500m². Five years later, a larger ice surface was built by endeavours of English guests, below the Hotel Belvédère (the so-called ice rink English). On the 20th of November 1880 the rink already included 6500m². That same year, the first ice skating Club was founded. The still existing International Ice Skating Club Davos was established in 1894 and from then on organized competitions in speed skating and figure skating.

140th anniversary of the Hotel Bellevue in Davos Wiesen
The Hotel Bellevue in Wiesen celebrates its 140th anniversary this year In 1873, Hans Bernhard decided to build a hotel on the best site in Davos Wiesen. The hotel would be worthy of a spa resort, with heated rooms, a ladies salon with a piano, bidets, and cows and goats milk available at any time of day. However, it wasn’t until Tobias Branger took over ownership of the Bellevue that it gained its good reputation. The guest book soon showed entries by visitors from all over Switzerland, Europe and America. English and Scottish guests were particularly attracted by the mild, spa climate. And in 1879, Friedrich Nietzsche himself spent a few weeks in Davos Wiesen in search of peace and relaxation. The hotel has been owned by the English Willmott family since 2008. It is now managed with great passion and commitment by young hosts Lisa Rudolf and Francesco Cunsolo. Lisa works her magic on delicious, imaginative cuisine while Francesco advises and takes care of guests.
