Australian short term visitor arrivals highest on record

The Australian Bureau of Statistics released short-term visitor arrivals figures on Friday 2 August that revealed a record 6.3 million visitor arrivals for year ending June 2013, an increase of 4.9 per cent relative to the previous year. There were 450,100 visitor arrivals during June 2013, an increase of 6.9 per cent relative to the same period of the previous year. Short-term visitor arrivals to Australia in June were boosted by spectator numbers for the recent British and Irish Lions rugby union tour.

New Zealand

  • There were 92,200 visitors from New Zealand during June 2013, bringing the total for the six months to June to 540,700 a decline of 1.7 per cent relative to the same period of the previous year.

Europe

  • There were 40,500 visitors from the United Kingdom during June 2013, bringing the total for the six months to June to 298,400, an increase of 3.8 per cent relative to the same period previous year.
  • There were 7,100 visitors from Germany during June 2013, bringing the total for the six months to June to 71,700,an increase of 4.7 per cent relative to the same period previous year.
  • There were 5,800 visitors from France during June 2013, bringing the total for the six months to June to 45,300an increase of 7.3 per cent relative to the same period previous year.

The Americas

  • There were 38,500 visitors from the United States of America during June 2013, bringing the total for the six months to June to 248,700, an increase of 5.6 per cent relative to the same period previous year.
  • There were 5,800 visitors from Canada during June 2013, bringing the total for the six months to June to 58,300,a decrease of 4.1 per cent relative to the same period previous year.

Southeast Asia

  • There were 41,700 visitors from Singapore during June 2013, bringing the total for the six months to June to 169,400, an increase of 12.9 per cent relative to the same period previous year.
  • There were 18,000 visitors from Malaysia during June 2013, bringing the total for the six months to June to 123,400, an increase of 4.8 per cent relative to the same period previous year.
  • There were 14,300 visitors from India during June 2013, bringing the total for the six months to June to 85,000,an increase of 6.0 per cent relative to the same period previous year.
  • There were 14,100 visitors from Indonesia during June 2013, bringing the total for the six months to June to 63,300, a decrease of 0.9 per cent relative to the same period previous year.
  • There were 5,700 visitors from Thailand during June 2013, bringing the total for the six months to June to 43,600,an increase of 4.8 per cent relative to the same period previous year.

Japan and Korea

  • There were 15,900 visitors from Japan during June 2013, bringing the total for the six months to June to 143,500,a decrease of 9.2 per cent relative to the same period previous year.
  • There were 14,400 visitors from Korea during June 2013, bringing the total for the six months to June to 95,300, a decrease of 2.3 per cent relative to the same period previous year.

Greater China

  • There were 38,900 visitors from China during June 2013, bringing the total for the six months to June to 373,300,an increase of 18.7 per cent relative to the same period previous year.
  • There were 13,900 visitors from Hong Kong during June 2013, bringing the total for the six months to June to 90,900, an increase of 6.6 per cent relative to the same period previous year.
  • There were 9,000 visitors from Taiwan during June 2013, bringing the total for the six months to June to 51,100,an increase of 15.1 per cent relative to the same period previous year.
